Sarzana Travel Guide

Sarzana (see the map) is a little town within the Province of La Spezia in Italy. It rests in the valley and along Magra River with a population of 1084. It is fraught with rolling hills that are beautiful and gothic architecture that surpasses many other regions of the world (Photo from cepolina.com).

There are many things to see and do when visiting Sarzana some of which you don’t want to miss. One of the top visited sites for tourists who flock to this locale each year is Fortezza di Sarzanello which can be found in the hills of Sarzana. Here you will find a military fortification which is eerie but majestic to look at and tour. The castle has two entrances which can be explored and visitors can also enjoy a view of the Magra Valley which cascades around the property.

It is also recommended that you check out Basilica Catedrale di Santa Maria Assunta which is one of the last standing places of worship in this town. It is comprised of marble and the architecture of the structure will leave you breathless. This Italian church is rich in history and many who visit it say they can feel the ancient history around them as they walk along the property.

After a long day of exploring Sanzana you will undoubtedly be hungry and this town, although small still boasts some of the world’s finest cuisine and eateries. Il Bacetto is consistently rated very high for its delicious pizza and beer, not to mention their reasonable prices. They specialize in thin crusted pizzas and also have a variety of cakes and some other menu items. Monday through Friday tends to be their busiest time of the week so it is recommended that you call ahead and make a reservation.

For fine dining and variety stop into Fahrenheit where the dishes include Italian, Mediterranean and classic seafood entrees. This restaurant is always rated very high for quality of food and the atmosphere is cozy and an art lovers dream come true. The dishes here are a bit pricier than some of the other restaurants, with most costing about $40-50 per plate, but it is well worth it. You may want to call ahead and inquire about needing reservations especially on the weekends.

For lodging in Sarzana, if you wish to stay right within the town center there are 13 hotels to choose from, most of which are very affordable. The Santa Caterina Park Hotel is quite popular and on the higher end for pricing with a one night stay costing approximately $129.00 per night. Their customer service is top notch however, and they have a nice restaurant within the hotel. This hotel though is not within walking distance of most attractions in the town center.

Al Santandrea nightly stays are about half the cost of the Santa Caterina Park hotel and is located close to the town’s center where dining and entertainment is readily available. If you plan to visit Liguria and northern Tuscany, this hotel is very close to those areas as well and visitors can take the autostrada to get there. All the rooms have modern amenities and the staff is very friendly.
